During World War II, those at home needed to keep their spirits raised and remain hopeful for their family and friends at war. Throughout the newspaper published in Mission and the Mission Central High School Newsletters, a few columns showed how people kept their spirits raised.

New Views, 1939 made a column called ‘Personals’ where they made comments about town citizens and what they were doing.

“Now Martha, what have you been doing these nights that makes you get stys?”

“Anita, have you ever heard the expression “He’s old enough to be your father”?

“Well Vera your old flame came back but he sure made a swell getaway again. What’s up in New Westminister?”

News Views, 1943, had columns that focused on the student’s likes and dislikes.

Favourite dish was a common column:

  • Orange ice cream, chocolate sundae, cherry phosphate, lemon pie, pie a la mode, ice cream sodas, chocolate cake, and ice cream
  • Pork chops and mashed spuds, steak and onions, chicken, curried veal, roast beef and Yorkshire pudding, hot dogs, macaroni and cheese, stew, fish and chips,
